Creating typologies means creating a more or less systematic classification of the types of things according to their common characteristics. It means erasing the particular characteristics in order to keep only the most general ones. In the case of Lieven De Boeck, this search leads at one hand to a typology of Architecture (as in the seven tables of urbanism which replaces some un-adapted concepts from modern architecture with some new un-adapted ones), a typology of the museum (based on the ideas of Ernst Neufert), a typology of Housing (which took form in a book, and in the exhibition "making things public" at the Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Arts in Rotterdam) or a typology of a flag ( The white flag(s) project).

On the other hand Lieven de Boeck creates a typology of himself through the medium of the self portrait. Although this portrait can be a performance ( Do you come to my house tonight?), a set of drawings ( We/ slide projection with voice over), a neon text ( let us be us) or an object ( my belongings), it always is a personal invite to write or imagine his identity.

Lieven de Boeck’s project deals with general themes as identity, borders, private and public, territory, appropriation, copy and original but in an extreme individual way.

Créer des typologies signifie créer une classification plus ou moins systématique de types de choses selon leurs caractéristiques communes. Cela signifie effacer les caractéristiques particulières dans le but de garder seulement les plus générales. Dans le cas de Lieven de Boeck , cette recherche conduit d’un côté à une typologie de l’Architecture (comme dans les sept tables de l’urbanisme lesquelles remplacent certains concepts inadaptés de l’architecture moderne par de nouveaux concepts eux-même inadaptés), à une typologie du musée (basé sur les idées de Ernst Neufert), à une typologie du Logement (qui prend forme dans un livre et dans une exposition "making things public" au Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Arts à Rotterdam) ou à une typologie de drapeaux (le projet white flag(s)).

D’un autre côté Lieven De Boeck crée une typologie de lui-même à travers l’autoportrait. Même si ce portrait peut être une performance (Do you come to my house tonight?), une série de dessins (We/ projection de diapositives avec une voie off), un texte de néon (let us be us) ou un objet (my belongings), c’est toujours une invitation personnelle pour écrire ou imaginer son identité.

Le projet de Lieven De Boeck implique des thèmes généraux comme l’identité, les limites, le public et le privé, le territoire, l’appropriation, la copie et l’original mais dans sens très individual.
